I was thinking about a particular collaborate book project and basically came to the same conclusion. Meanwhile also the hosted booktype pro has arrived, but the interface is still the same and unfortunately is except for the most (…and very!) expensive deal almost not customizable. Like you, I think they either missed an opportunity or need some more time.
I also came across another tool, http://pressbooks.com/ which is a wordpress plugin (unfortunately as far as I see not really working with already existing wordpress sites). It seems more appealing but still lacks of some basic functionality and customization options. Anyway, hope there’s some progress in this interesting field and thanks again for this helpful review.
